September is Alopecia Awareness month and so we thought we would do our bit to help spread awareness of alopecia and also give those of you who aren’t sure what it is some useful information.
Alopecia is an autoimmune condition where the immune system mistakenly attacks hair follicles, resulting in hair loss. It is not yet understood why exactly this happens and sadly there is currently no cure for alopecia areata.
Now although alopecia, in general, refers to hair loss there are actually different sub-categories within it. Some of these include Alopecia Areata, which is where round patches of hair are lost. Alopecia Totalis, which is the complete loss of scalp hair and Alopecia Universalis, which is where there is complete hair loss on both the scalp and the body.
Around 20% of people with alopecia areata will have a family member with the condition. Those with alopecia areata are more likely to have family members with other autoimmune or atopic conditions, such as asthma, eczema, hay fever, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, psoriasis, thyroid disease, and vitiligo.
The month of September is specifically National Alopecia Areata awareness month so to help out in raising awareness and money for research you can hold or sponsor an event in your area, including tea parties, races, book sales and many many more.
You could also put up flyers in your local area or head over to Alopecia UK’s website to find events happening near you that you can join or ways you can donate.
Or if you want you could do some research yourself and if you have the money, donate to charities that are helping to find a cure for it. The possibilities are endless.
Masumi Headwear is proud to participate in collaboration with Alopeica UK and we will be exhibiting in Bristol between 27-29 September. So help us in spreading awareness and love this month because together we can make a difference! Did you know that Masumi Headwear is now collaborating with Ellen Wille wigs? You can check out the beautiful collection – you cannot find it cheaper anywhere.
